The Dismal Swamp Trail is a part of the NC Birding Trail, East Coast Greenway and National Recreation Trail. The Dismal Swamp State Park is located at the north end of the county on US Hwy 17. Flea markets, roadside produce stands and local eateries afford a taste of the unexpected. Our local campground, nestled in the woods of Camden County assures a quiet, relaxing option to connect with nature.

Dismal Swamp Canal Welcome Center
The Dismal Swamp Canal Welcome Center provides travel and tourism information for the entire State of North Carolina. It is located on US Hwy 17 and the historic Dismal Swamp Canal, an alternate route on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. The Center is located three miles south of the NC/VA state line and the Dismal Swamp State Park’s entrance is located adjacent to this property. The Dismal Swamp is designated as a National Park Service Network to Freedom Underground Railroad site as well as part of the NC/VA Civil War Trail. The canal was hand dug in the late 1700’s and is the oldest continually operating waterway in the continental US. Hiking, biking, birding, paddling and photography opportunities are abundant.

Sylvan Heights Bird Park
Open to the public since October 2006, the 18-acre facility features large, walk- through aviaries displaying birds from South America, North America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. Tranquil gardens and lush natural areas enhance the beauty of the birds on exhibit.
At Sylvan Heights Bird Park, we not only seek to entertain and engage visitors, but to inspire and educate them about the importance of waterfowl, wildlife and wetland conservation.
